Response to Single Market Strategy 2025

31 Jan 2025

MWF SUBMISSION ON CALL FOR EVIDENCE REGARDING SINGLE MARKET STRATEGY 2025 - SUMMARY The Mobile & Wireless Forum (MWF) is an international association of companies with an interest in mobile and wireless communications including the evolution of 5G and the Internet of Things. For further information on the MWF please consult our website www.mwfai.org. The organisation is registered in Rijvisschestraat 124, 9052 Zwijnaarde, Belgium; its EU Transparency Register ID is 94163271570-54. The MWF thanks the European Commission (EC) for the opportunity to provide input on the Single Market Strategy 2025. At the outset, the MWF believes in the promise and potential of the European Single Market. We also believe that the EC already has the tools and capacity under the existing framework to once again enforce Single Market rules. In addition to improving the existing framework through enforcement of the Single Market rules, there is also an opportunity to modernise the framework to realise the Single Markets full potential. In this respect we refer specifically to the issue of digitising compliance information. Currently, radio product compliance in Europe is based on the use of printed labels and information. For devices with in-built screens or devices that can be connected to screens, markings such as the CE mark can be provided in the software of the device and made easily retrievable via the screen. A QR code could equally be used to direct users and authorities to the required or relevant information. E-labelling has been found to have no real impact on market surveillance authorities but does benefit consumers as information can be made more accessible and remains available throughout the lifetime of the device. The EC should also recognize that traditional labelling has enormous environmental costs that are at direct odds with other EC objectives. If the EC wants to unlock the full environmental, accessibility and trade benefits associated with the single market, digitization of all labelling should become the default option to indicate compliance for the broadest possible range of products. To elaborate our views in this area and to provide further information, we submit the White Paper Why the European Union should adopt e-labelling. For more information on MWFs eLabelling Initiative please go to https://www.elabellinginitiative.org or contact: Mr Michael Milligan, Secretary-General, MWF (michael.millligan@mwfai.org) Mr Thomas Barmüller, Director EMEA, MWF (thomas.barmueller@mwfai.org)
