Response to Climate Law

6 Feb 2020

TUI Group is the world’s largest tourism company, operating along the entire touristic value-chain in over 180 destinations and with more than 70.000 employees. We welcome this opportunity to respond to the European Commission’s roadmap on a European Climate Law. The Commission’s ambition to tackle the issue of carbon emissions and climate change head-on is commendable and necessary. We understand and acknowledge the need for all sectors, including travel and tourism, to contribute to these efforts. Together, travel and tourism currently contribute some 5% of global carbon emissions, with half arising from aviation. Quality holiday experiences depend on beautiful, biodiverse destinations, thriving communities, stable weather systems and customer comfort – all of which are at risk from climate change. A reduction in global carbon emissions is therefore essential for our industry. Our industry at large has a decisive role to play in this transition towards an energy-efficient, lower-carbon future and, as a sector leader, TUI has a responsibility to play its part. In this context, TUI Group welcomes the specific reference within the roadmap to the importance of factors such as the “prosperity of society, the competitiveness of the economy, (…) protection of vulnerable consumers, and fairness and solidarity across society and regions”. While it is clear that sustainability must play a role in all EU policies, we would like to underline that efforts at the level of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) should be considered in the development of a coherent EU approach to climate protection. Climate change is a global challenge which must be tackled at the global level. Lastly, TUI Group underlines the importance of technological developments in this process and thus appreciates the roadmap’s reference to “strengthening incentives for developing climate-friendly and sustainable practices, products and technologies”. Sustainable innovation in the travel sector, including on topics such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel, remains crucial and requires a robust level of support and attention from the public sector. TUI Group remains committed to a sustainable future for the European Union and would like to actively cooperate with policymakers towards a constructive green transition.
