Action plan to conserve fisheries resources and protect marine ecosystems

Maritime affairs and fisheries

The plan points out where action is needed to address the by-catch of sensitive species and adverse impacts on sensitive habitats through technical measures such as area closures, gear changes and mitigation measures for sensitive species. It contributes to one of the main objectives of the European Green Deal, in making fisheries more sustainable, protecting marine ecosystems and their biodiversity.

EU Fishing Industry Urges Policy Coherence Over Bottom Trawl Restrictions

Finnish conservationists urge EU to ban bottom trawling, protect endangered species

Suomen luonnonsuojeluliitto - The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation, 12 May 2021

The organization wants improved fishing selectivity to reduce bycatch of mammals, birds and endangered species. They call for banning bottom trawling across the EU and better technical measures in the Baltic Sea for Cod and Salmon. They emphasize urgent protection for critically endangered Eel throughout the EU.
This would protect Finland's endemic Saimaa Seal population from fishing nets and preserve Baltic marine habitats.
Bottom trawling fisheries in other Member States would lose access to current fishing methods and areas.

Fish Producers Urge Partner Status in EU Marine Protection Plan
