Establishment of Harmonised Risk Indicators to measure the reduction in risks and adverse impacts from pesticide use

The Commission proposes establishing a harmonised risk indicator under Directive 2009/128/EC, based on data on the sales of pesticides collected under Regulation (EC) No 1185/2009, and the properties of the active substances contained in these pesticides. The indicator will show changes in the potential risks from pesticide use for human health and the environment over time

CropLife Europe warns proposed pesticide risk indicators are misleading

The industry argues that indicators based on sales fail to accurately measure risk. They want data to include farmer training and specific safety measures used onsite. They also reject using emergency pesticide authorizations as a metric for risk.
The industry could report risk reduction without necessarily decreasing pesticide sales volumes.
