Response to Revision of lists of pollutants affecting surface and groundwaters

13 Mar 2023

Clariant, Global Product Stewardship, does not agree with the listing of a naturally occurring substance like silver to be a priority substance under the Water Framework Directive. Only substances found to pose a significant risk to or via the aquatic environment should be considered for inclusion on the priority substances list. Even the German Environment Agency has not identified a pollution risk for silver in its latest report for Waters in Germany (2017). As a member of the European BPR Biocidal Silver Task Force (EUSTF), we support the authorization of silver chloride as a biocidal active substance and we are not aware of an environmental risk for the supported uses. Clariant does furthermore support the comments made the EUSTF in this this public consultation (attached).

Response to Sustainable Products Initiative

21 Jun 2022

Clariant welcomes the European Commission proposal on the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and supports the overall objectives of this ambitious initiative. We are convinced that sustainable products can bring a decisive contribution in achieving the EU’s flagship goals established under the Green Deal program, in particular in terms of safe and sustainable by design chemicals, low-carbon and circular solutions. Clariant is committed to addressing the obstacles that are hampering a higher circularity of products in key downstream sectors, through a smart combination of design for recycling, reduction and re-use, and recycling from mechanical or chemical recycling. The European chemical industry is a key enabler and contributor to societal aspirations proactively working on substitution to improve performance and bring even more benefits to society, while ensuring that any potential risks are properly assessed and managed. Clariant was among the pioneering companies that have integrated a systematic screening methodology to assess the sustainability of our portfolio by applying a holistic and comprehensive set of sustainability criteria addressing both the environmental and social dimension. In order to make sure the upcoming provisions are fit for purpose, implementable and enforceable, we would like to highlight the below recommendations on a number of building blocks included in the proposal from the E. Commission (SEE ATTACHED FILE).
