WISE demands nuclear reality check in new EU energy programme

8 May 2025
Message — The organization calls for a reality check by including a zero-nuclear scenario in all assessments. They recommend prioritizing nuclear waste management and decommissioning over unrealistic plans for new reactor construction. They argue that current projections ignore the high costs and long timelines of nuclear energy.12
Why — Focusing on realistic data prevents political distraction from more effective and lower-cost climate actions.3
Impact — Future generations suffer if the financial burden of waste management continues to be delayed.4

Response to Payment services – revision of EU rules (Directive)

25 Sept 2023

Wise welcomes the European Commission's proposals for a revised Payment Services Directive (PSD3) and new Payment Services Regulation (PSR), especially the enhanced harmonisation a Regulation will bring. The lack of harmonisation and the differing national interpretations on certain regulatory requirements has been problematic and caused significant challenges for innovative firms to expand across borders. The new package will bring several important improvements to the current framework. These include levelling the playing field between banks and non-banks by granting direct access to payment systems and safeguarding accounts with the central banks, strengthening the de-banking provisions, and removing further obstacles to open banking. However, several provisions, especially with regards to transparency in cross-border payment fees, fraud and liability, IBAN discrimination, can still be improved to reach their intended objectives. Please see attached document for our full feedback.

Response to Instant Payments

7 Apr 2021

Wise welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback on the European Commission’s initiatives on instant payments. We were heartened to see instant payments becoming a true pillar of the Commission’s Retail Payments Strategy and applaud the ambition to make instant payments the norm across the EU. Wise agrees entirely with that objective and would encourage the Commission to take the necessary legislative steps to help us get there as soon as reasonably possible. Please find our response attached.
