Food safety

This evaluation will assess the mandate, performance and organisational framework of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). EFSA, founded in 2002, provides scientific advice and scientific and technical support for the Union's legislation and policies in all fields with a direct or indirect impact on food and feed safety. EFSA also provides independent information and communicates on risks. The evaluation will consider whether a revision of the founding legislation is required

Chemical Industry Urges EFSA to Speed Up Approvals

European Chemical Industry Council, 5 Apr 2024

The organization requests face-to-face technical hearings with EFSA to avoid written exchanges and increase efficiency. They want better scientific guidance on required studies for food and feed additives. They also seek longer pre-notification periods for scientific opinions.
This would reduce delays in getting product approvals and lower costs of compliance.
Consumer and environmental groups lose from weaker oversight and faster approvals with less scrutiny.

FEFANA calls for faster EFSA approvals and streamlined procedures

FEFANA, 8 Apr 2024

FEFANA requests faster assessment timelines to address a significant backlog of feed additive dossiers. They suggest adopting practical pre-submission advice and technical hearings similar to the pharmaceutical sector. Additionally, EFSA guidance must be better aligned with existing European Union legislation.
Faster procedures would reduce market access delays for new additives and increase regulatory predictability.
Lengthy delays and regulatory inconsistencies hinder innovation and encourage companies to develop products outside Europe.
